Maira Kalman
Maira Kalman is one of those people I feel lucky to overlap with in this life. She's most known for her books for kids and adults. I love "13 Words" with Lemony Snicket for kids and her illustrated version of the Strunk and White's classic "The Elements of Style." She's also illustrated lots of New Yorker covers.
I first discovered her work when she had a solo show at the ICA on Penn's campus. It was more than an art show - it contained artworks but also a delicate collection of her objects - embroidered handkerchiefs, garments, ladders, letters. I swooned over this simple painting of a pink package. Later I saw her beautiful exhibit at the Jewish Museum in Philadelphia - a sweet tribute to her mother's clothes and style called “Sara Berman’s Closet” (it also showed at the MET) (and became a book).
